  • Hazard joined Real Madrid from Chelsea for £88m in 2019 but failed to exceed the hype
  • The Belgian was a major flop and left the La Liga giants in 2023 to become a free agent
  • Toni Kroos made controversial remarks about Hazard and fans have had varied reactions

An intense debate has emerged on social media following Toni Kroos’ recent sentiments, believed to be subtly aimed at Chelsea legend, Eden Hazard.

Kroos, largely considered a Real Madrid legend, did not hold back as he boldly declared some players came to Los Blancos for a hefty fee, only to ruin their careers.

Many fans read between the lines with the German’s sentiments and were certain he was talking about Hazard, who recently left Real Madrid by mutual consent.

Despite a mega-money move to the Spanish capital in 2019, the Belgian - who was once competing with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for a Ballon d’Or - only managed to score seven goals in four years with the club.

It is perhaps for this reason that Kroos was vocal after Real Madrid completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund star midfielder, Jude Bellingham for £88 million on a six-year deal.

“We had another player who came for a lot of money and basically let his career die. It was a lot of money, I think everyone would say that wasn't a good transfer. But let's be positive,” Kroos said on his podcast, Einfach mal Luppen.

Kroos vs Hazard debate rages

Following Kroos’ sentiments, a Twitter user identified as @CFCMod saw his tweet inadvertently go viral as he came to Hazard’s defence.

“Eden Hazard is 10 times more talented than Toni Kroos and he wouldn’t have been able to carry a club like Chelsea on his back the way Hazard did, I don’t care if you’re offended by facts,” he stated.

What ensued was an interesting debate among fans, with some backing his statement while others came up with statistics to prove which of the two was a better player.

Kroos vs Hazard: fans react

@theLucasLad said:

“Hazard could never perform in a World Cup like Kroos.”

@Businessartist added:

“Agree on the statement that Kroos wouldn‘t have been able to play such a key player role at Chelsea. But he is a different player. He managed to be starting 11 player at the best club in the world for 9 consecutive years. And Hazard didn‘t even manage that for one year. Both are world class players. Not comparable, though.”

@ArditMadrid boldly claimed:

“Toni Kroos will be remembered as top 5 midfielders in the history of football. Hazard will be remembered only from Chelsea fans.”

@Greatcheda added:

“They don't even play the same position and Toni close is one of the best in his position in modern football , disciplined ,precise and very intelligent with so many trophies to show for it , it's not about carrying the team on your back bro nobody sent him message.”

According to @Scotdetcher:

“The Eden Hazard run at Chelsea was the most impressive single player performance of the last decade. Benzema in the CL last year was close but a fraction of the length.”

Rating Real Madrid's No. 5s

Sports Brief also recently ranked the last six players to wear Real Madrid's famous number five jersey, following the signing of Bellingham earlier this month.

The shirt is usually associated with midfield maestros, so it made sense for the former Dortmund star to be handed the number upon signing with Los Blancos.

However, the highest-ranked player to wear Real Madrid's No. 5 remains French legend, Zinedine Zidane, whose performances are applauded to this day.
